Important work to repair the remaining section of damaged river wall at Blaen-y-Cwm Road, following storm damage, will get underway from next week.
RCT Council last month provided a progress update on the repair scheme, having appointed Centregreat as the contractor responsible for delivering the work – which includes preliminary activity this month and full repairs from May, when seasonal restrictions on working within the river come to an end.
The structure, which supports the highway at Blaen-y-Cwm Road, was damaged by Storm Dennis in February 2020. One lane has been brought out of use for motorists to ensure safety, with traffic lights in operation. The first phase of repairs were successfully undertaken from September 2020.
The Council can now confirm that Centregreat will resume activity on site in the week commencing Monday, April 19. The work will continue throughout the summer, and is scheduled for completion in early autumn 2021. This will enable the lane closure at Blaen-y-Cwm Road to be lifted at that time.
Councillor Andrew Morgan, Leader of Rhondda Cynon Taf Council and Cabinet Member with responsibility for Highways and Transportation, said: “Local residents and road users will see site activity at the Blaen-y-Cwm Road river wall site from next week, toward repairing the final storm-damaged section of the structure. This remains a priority scheme for the Council, having made as much progress as possible last year, before the restrictions on river working throughout the autumn and winter months came into effect.
“With those restrictions soon to be lifted, I’d again like to thank the local community for its cooperation – as we recognise the disruption brought by the unavoidable lane closure at this location. The Council appointed a contractor for the remaining work last month in anticipation of works being able to start in April – and we will work together to ensure efficient progress over the summer months, so the lane closure can be safely removed as soon as possible.”
