A much loved Barry Island fish and chip shop made famous by Gavin and Stacey has announced it will close its doors for good after 25 years.

Boofy’s, a long standing favourite with locals and visitors alike, confirmed the news in a heartfelt Facebook post, saying it will close permanently in early January 2026.

The chip shop became a household name thanks to the BBC hit Gavin and Stacey, where it regularly appeared in the background of scenes and was often referenced by characters. For fans of the show, Boofy’s is known as the place where they get chippy becoming iconic among viewers. The shop is also mentioned as Nessa’s favourite chippy, adding to its cult status.

Over the years, Boofy’s has been featured in countless episodes, helping to put Barry Island firmly on the map for TV tourists who still flock to the area to see filming locations from the show.

Announcing the closure, the owner shared the following message on Facebook:

The announcement has sparked an emotional response online, with many customers sharing memories of visits stretching back decades, as well as stories of travelling to Barry Island purely to visit the famous chippy.

Boofy’s will remain open on selected dates over the Christmas and New Year period, giving fans one last chance to enjoy a final portion of chips before a true Barry Island institution says goodbye.
