Innovative later living housing scheme planned for Caerphilly

Caerphilly County Borough Council has announced that it is submitting a planning application to develop an innovative new later living housing scheme on the site of the former Ty Darran care home in Risca.

The proposed new building will be designed with high levels of energy efficiency to reduce tenants’ bills, whilst also reducing carbon emissions.  It will also boast spacious apartments, with lift access to all floors.

If approved, the development will include a range of communal areas that can be used for a variety of organised activities and events.  Apartments will also feature personal outdoor spaces, such as balconies, along with accessible communal garden areas.

The new scheme will be managed by the council and will be used to relocate existing tenants from schemes in the locality that have, for a number of issues, been programmed for closure.  Affected tenants have been consulted with throughout the process and will be involved as future plans are developed.

Cllr Shayne Cook, the council’s Cabinet Member for Social Care and Housing, said “If the proposals for this development are approved it would give us the opportunity to transform the current housing offer for older persons in the area.

“The new facility will be unlike any of our existing sheltered housing accommodation; with high energy efficiency levels, and flexible communal and outdoor spaces offering increased opportunities to improve tenants’ health and wellbeing.”
