Mastering the 60-30-10 Rule: A Simple Guide to Perfect Bedroom Interior Design

The 60-30-10 Rule is a classic interior design principle used to create a balanced and harmonious colour scheme in a space.

It breaks down the use of colours into three proportions:

  • 60% Dominant Colour: This is the primary colour that sets the overall tone of the room.
  • 30% Secondary Colour: This colour complements the dominant colour and is used for upholstery, curtains, or accent walls to add depth and interest.
  • 10% Accent Colour: This is the pop of colour used for smaller decor items like throw pillows, artwork, or accessories to add vibrancy and personality.

For example, in a bedroom:

  • 60% could be a neutral like bamboo for the walls and bedding.
  • 30% could be a soft grey or green for curtains or a rug.
  • 10% could be a bold colour like midnight blue or coral for throw pillows or artwork.

This rule ensures a cohesive and visually appealing design without overwhelming the space.

Planning a bedroom makeover

1. Define Your Goals

  • What do you want to achieve? (e.g., more storage, better lighting, a calming vibe, or a bold statement)
  • Consider your lifestyle and needs (e.g., work-from-home space, cosy retreat, or guest bedroom).

2. Set a Budget

  • Determine how much you’re willing to spend.
  • Prioritise key elements (e.g., furniture, paint, lighting, or decor).

3. Choose a Design Style

  • Decide on a theme or style (e.g., modern, minimalist, bohemian, Scandinavian, or rustic).
  • Gather inspiration from Pinterest, Instagram, or interior design blogs.

4. Pick a Colour Palette

  • Use the 60-30-10 Rule for a balanced look:
  • 60% Dominant Colour: Walls, bedding, or large furniture.
  • 30% Secondary Colour: Curtains, rugs, or accent furniture.
  • 10% Accent Colour: Pillows, artwork, or decor.
  • Stick to 2-3 main colours for a cohesive feel.

5. Plan the Layout

  • Measure your room and furniture to ensure everything fits.
  • Consider the bed’s placement (usually the focal point) and arrange other pieces around it.
  • Leave enough space for movement and functionality.

6. Focus on Key Elements

  • Bed: Invest in a comfortable mattress and stylish bedding.
  • Storage: Add nightstands, dressers, or under-bed storage.
  • Lighting: Layer lighting with overhead lights, bedside lamps, and accent lighting.
  • Flooring: Add a rug to anchor the space and add warmth.

7. Add Personality with Decor

  • Wall Art: Hang artwork, mirrors, or shelves.
  • Textiles: Use throw pillows, blankets, and curtains to add texture.
  • Plants: Incorporate greenery for a fresh, lively feel.
  • Personal Touches: Display photos, books, or sentimental items.

8. Declutter and Organise

  • Clear out unnecessary items to create a clean, relaxing space.
  • Use organisers for drawers, closets, and shelves.

Choosing the correct size bed for your bedroom

Choosing the right bed size depends on several factors, including the size of your bedroom which is why measuring the dimensions of your bedroom is important.

Consider your sleeping habits. If you sleep alone, a single or small double bed may be sufficient. However, if you sleep with a partner, you may want to consider a double bed or king-size bed, if you tend to move around a lot while you sleep.

The height of the bed is also an important consideration. If you are tall, you may want to choose a bed that is higher off the ground. If you are shorter, you may want to choose a bed that is lower to the ground.

UK bed sizes

Here are the standard UK bed sizes:

  • Single: 90 x 190 cm (3’0″ x 6’3″)
  • Small Double: 120 x 190 cm (4’0″ x 6’3″)
  • Double: 135 x 190 cm (4’6″ x 6’3″)
  • King: 150 x 200 cm (5’0″ x 6’6″)
  • Super King: 180 x 200 cm (6’0″ x 6’6″)

This differs from US and European sizing standards. For example, a UK Double is smaller than a US Double/Full bed. UK beds also tend to be slightly shorter than their US counterparts.

Summary

Beds are available in a variety of styles, from traditional to contemporary. Choose a bed that fits your personal style and the overall décor of your bedroom.
