Newport City Council has issued an update on its ongoing 20mph listening exercise, which was launched in response to concerns from residents and businesses about the implementation of the new speed limits across the city.
The listening exercise, initiated in November 2024, was introduced to gather public feedback on how the 20mph speed limit, which was rolled out in September 2023, has impacted road users. The council has since received a significant number of responses and has been working to assess the views expressed.
According to the latest update, Newport City Council has identified several roads where changes could be considered. The local authority is now conducting a detailed review of the feedback, alongside data on road safety, traffic flow, and environmental impact, to determine where adjustments may be appropriate.
The council is working closely with Welsh Government, which introduced the default 20mph speed limit across Wales, to explore possible modifications in areas where there is strong public sentiment for change. However, any proposed adjustments will need to align with national policy and road safety considerations.
This increase will be from the default speed limit of 20mph, up to 30mph.
The 16 areas identified are:
- Caerphilly Road (part – extend existing 30mph from the property ‘Brambles’ up to Garth Terrace)
- Bassaleg Road (part – Pye Corner up to 130 Bassaleg Road)
- Bettws Lane (part – from Malpas Road to Newport High School)
- Duffryn Drive
- Duffryn Way
- Frederick Street industrial area (including Broad Street, Kings Parade – part, and Enterprise Way – part)
- George Street (and George Street Bridge – part)
- Lighthouse Road (part – between Morgan Way to a point prior to controlled crossing near Duffryn Way)
- Morgan Way
- Royal Oak Hill (part – extend existing 30mph to junction with Chepstow Road)
- Tredegar House Drive
- Tregwilym Road (part – Western Valley Road to Chartist Drive)
- Usk Road (part – extend existing 30mph to junction with The Hawthorns)
- Wern Industrial Estate
- West Nash Road (part – from junction with Nash Road to point near St Mary’s Close)
- Wharf Road
The council has confirmed that it will provide further updates in the coming months as it continues to analyse the data and liaise with Welsh Government on potential changes. Residents and businesses are encouraged to stay informed and participate in ongoing discussions regarding the 20mph policy.
