Swansea roadshows planned to look at walking and cycling map

A series of drop-in sessions have been arranged so the public can talk to transport officials about the blueprint for Swansea’s future walking and cycling map.

Consultation with residents in Swansea has already began and Swansea Council is asking everyone for their views on existing and new walking & cycling routes planned across the city.

Residents have been able to give their views online and can look at the existing ‘Active Travel Network Map’ which was produced in 2018. The consultation will continue until November 15.

Five drop-in sessions have now been organised in various locations across the city from October 15. Transport officers will be on hand to answer questions and give residents a guided tour of the current map.

The latest plans are part of the Welsh Government’s Active Travel initiative which sees councils bid for funding to create new routes and encourage more people to choose cycling and walking instead of the car.

Mark Thomas, Cabinet Member for Environment Enhancement & Infrastructure Management, said: “We’ve had a good response so far from people in the city who are providing comments on new routes they’d like to see developed.

“We still want to hear from everyone who has an interest in improving walking and cycling routes.

“The planned drop-in sessions are a great way for residents to talk in person to our transport team and have questions they have answered before they take part in the consultation.”

This year, Swansea succeeded in bidding for £3.2million which is being used to create new routes throughout Swansea and will also assist with the design and feasibility of further walking and cycling routes.

Cllr Thomas added: “Since the adoption of the original map back in 2018, we have been very successful in securing funding from the Welsh Government which enables us to improve our existing network and increase the availability of safe off-road routes for everyone to use.

“When the existing map is updated and approved we will continue to bid for funding to help us continue the expansion of our walking and cycling network.”

Drop in sessions will take place at: Ostreme Centre, Mumbles – Oct 15 (11am-2pm) Swansea Central Library – Oct 16 (10am-2pm), Forge Fach Community Centre – Oct 18 (11am-2pm), Gorseinon Library – Oct 21 (4pm-6pm), Penlan Leisure Centre – Nov 3 (4pm-7pm).
