Swansea sports clubs can bid for new council grants of up to £1,500

A number of local sports clubs around Swansea can now claim new grants of up to £1,500 to help the city out of the pandemic.

Swansea Council has this week launched the offer for clubs and associations that either self-manage their council pitches or lease grounds from the council.

It will help clubs used by thousands of local residents as they look to bounce back from the difficulties of the past 18 months.

The council has already waived permit fees for clubs that hire council pitches but do not manage the grounds.

The new grants will be administered by sport and health officers, part of the council’s cultural services team.

Council cabinet member Robert Francis-Davies said: “Swansea’s sports clubs and associations are crucial to keeping our communities strong and our residents fit and healthy.

“We’re offering this new assistance to those that self-manage or lease our pitches as they continue to work hard in the aftermath of the pandemic.

“We’re doing all we can to help them – and other clubs – reach their new goals.”

To support the recovery of the local economy from the pandemic the council, with the Regeneration Swansea partnership, has developed an economic recovery plan for Swansea. Strong support is being given to the city’s tourism, leisure, events and hospitality sectors.

The council is supporting businesses, organisations and individuals to build new resilience in the local economy. £20m has been set aside. The sports grants are part of this.

Clubs that don’t meet the criteria for the new grant scheme can contact the council for advice on other sources of funding.

Grant applications will be accepted from today until October 30, with the council making decisions swiftly.  Application forms are available by email from [email protected]
