The Best Yacht Clubs in Wales

From historic havens to modern marvels, there’s a Welsh yacht club for every kind of sailor, and even for those who just love a good view with a G&T or glass of chardonnay in hand. So, grab a cuppa (or something stronger, we don’t judge!) and let’s set sail on a virtual tour of the best yacht clubs in this beautiful corner of the UK.

Steeped in History: The Royal Welsh Yacht Club

Let’s kick things off with a yacht club that’s practically a part of Welsh maritime heritage – The Royal Welsh Yacht Club in Caernarfon. It’s a clubhouse nestled within the ancient walls of Caernarfon Castle, which is said to be the oldest yacht club premises in the entire world! Established way back in 1847, this place has seen it all.

It’s not just about ancient stones and royal patronage (though that’s pretty impressive). The Royal Welsh offers a genuinely friendly and welcoming vibe. They’ve got a varied programme that includes sailing, rowing, and even walking and social events throughout the year. So, whether you’re a seasoned skipper registering your yacht in Malta or a complete landlubber looking for a unique social scene, you’ll find something to float your boat. Their facilities include two bars – perfect for recounting tales of the sea – and they even host a race day in the annual Menai Strait Regatta. For those keen on rowing, they have Celtic Sea Rowing longboats and offer regular sessions.

Capital Sailing: Cardiff Yacht Club & Cardiff Bay Yacht Club

Heading south to the vibrant capital, Cardiff boasts a couple of cracking clubs. Cardiff Yacht Club always extends a warm welcome to visitors from other clubs, inviting them to enjoy all that Cardiff Bay has to offer. While they don’t charge visitors for a spot, they do encourage guests to support the club by using their bar – a fair deal, we’d say! They can accommodate vessels up to 36ft and have essential facilities like toilets and showers. It’s a busy spot, especially on weekends, so be prepared to raft up.

Picturesque Penarth: Penarth Yacht Club

Just a stone’s throw from Cardiff, you’ll find the charming seaside town of Penarth, home to Penarth Yacht Club. This club beautifully combines sailing and rowing with a lively social atmosphere. They cater to all levels of sailing, from beginners in Mirror dinghies to championship-level racing in Enterprise and Laser fleets. This one’s for you if you’re looking at yachts on the UNICO site. They even introduced RS Quest Dinghies for adult sail training and family Friday night club sessions.

The rowing side of things is steeped in tradition, with Penarth Rowing Club celebrating its 144th anniversary in 2024. They row both on the sea in coastal boats and on Cardiff Bay in fine boats. The clubhouse itself is a Grade II listed building, and they have an active social calendar, including dining options with lovely views. They’ve even had fundraising appeals to improve accessibility, showing their commitment to all members.

Dovey Delight: Dovey Yacht Club (Clwb Hwylio Dyfi)

Venturing up to mid-Wales, in the stunning estuary of Aberdyfi (Aberdovey), lies the Dovey Yacht Club (DYC) or Clwb Hwylio Dyfi. Often described as possibly the best-located yacht club in Wales, it offers breathtaking views over the Dyfi estuary. This friendly club is great for watersports fans.

They have a dinghy fleet that includes GP14s and Lasers, a junior fleet of Toppers (many of which are club boats), and a popular kitesurfing scene. DYC is particularly committed to youth sailing, offering training during school holidays and initiatives to get local youngsters out on the water. “Topper Week” in August is a highlight, welcoming sailors of all abilities. With newly refurbished changing rooms and a packed programme of sailing and social events, it’s a fantastic family-friendly club.

So, Which Welsh Yacht Club Floats Your Boat?

Wales truly is a sailor’s paradise, and its yacht clubs are a huge part of that charm. Whether you’re after world-class racing, gentle cruising in stunning scenery, a vibrant social life, or a place to introduce the kids to the joys of being on the water, there’s a Welsh yacht club with your name on it. Each offers its own unique blend of history, facilities, and atmosphere, all set against the backdrop of some of the UK’s most beautiful coastline. So, why not pay one (or all!) of them a visit? You might just find your new home from home on the Welsh waves.
