RCT Council will shortly undertake significant works to Bodringallt Bridge, which supports the A4058 in Ystrad – with minimal disruption expected on the main road throughout the scheme.
The scheme will infill the void beneath the bridge so that the bridge deck no longer functions as a structural element. To complement this, additional work will reprofile the adjacent embankment slope, install a highway drainage system, repaint the metal parapet and remove vegetation from all walls.
The masonry approach wall and wing walls will also be repointed as part of the scheme, while the western approach wall will be demolished and rebuilt.
The 12-week scheme will start on Wednesday, January 19, and Centregreat Ltd is the Council’s appointed contractor to carry out the works. The scheme is funded by the Council’s Supplementary Highways Capital Programme.
The contractor does not require a lane/road closure on A4058 William Street to deliver the works, but lane narrowing is likely to be required to ensure safety. The bus stop adjacent to Sandy Bank Road will be temporarily moved during part of the scheme – bus users should follow the relevant signage.
Councillor Andrew Morgan, Leader of Rhondda Cynon Taf Council and Cabinet Member with responsibility for Highways and Transportation, said: “This upcoming scheme on the main road through Ystrad will deliver stability improvements to Bodringallt Bridge, along with a series of further repair works to future-proof the structure. It is funded by the Council’s Capital Programme for 2021/22, using a dedicated allocation for Highways Structures.
“Our commitment to investing in this area as a priority continues, with the Council responsible for more than 1,500 walls, culverts and bridges which support the road network across Rhondda Cynon Taf. A separate targeted scheme at A4054 Cardiff Road in Taff’s Well, to repair a parapet wall and a retaining wall, is also starting on Wednesday via the Capital Programme.
“The scheme in Ystrad is not anticipated to cause much disruption to the community – though a bus stop will be moved on a temporary basis and vehicle lanes on the bridge, above the works area, may be narrowed. Thanks to residents, road users and businesses in advance for their cooperation.”
