Work is under way on a new play area at Pill Mill in Newport, which will include one of the largest ship features in the UK.

The playground, on a green community space, will have equipment for a range of ages, including climbing, balancing and accessible equipment. It will also incorporate the Pill “mound”, where slides and climbing ropes will be installed.

The play area has been designed by Kompan and is funded from various sources, including Pill Unity and the UK government’s Pride in Place impact scheme. It is expected to be finished before the end of this year.

Councillor Yvonne Forsey, Newport City Council’s cabinet member for climate change, waste and recycling, said: “This will be a wonderful asset for local families. I’m sure it will be treasured by the community so it can continue to provide enjoyment for children for many years to come.

“This is part of an ongoing programme to improve existing play areas and provide new ones across the city.”
