CHILDREN aiming to be a prince or princess for a day can have their very own castle to match if they head along to Oystermouth Castle later this month.

Young visitors have the chance to come along as their favourite fairy-tale character at the special event on Bank Holiday Monday, August 26 that includes opportunities to enjoy crafty workshops, fairytales, glitter face-painting and entertainment from the likes of Rapunzel, Aladdin, Jasmine and Elsa.

The family fun day will give princes and princesses the chance to play out their dreams and fairy tales in a proper medieval castle and learn a little bit more about what went on there back in the days of Norman knights and the Lords and Ladies of Gower.

Robert Francis-Davies, Cabinet Member for investment, regeneration and tourism, said: “The council works alongside the Friends of Oystermouth Castle, not just to maintain the historic attraction but also to arrange a number of family-friendly events throughout the open season.

“Many thousands of people visit Oystermouth Castle every summer. The castle offers a first class visitor experience that’s as fun as it is educational and helps boost the local economy too.”

Every Wednesday in August, children will also be able to hone their crafty skills at drop-in workshops where they can make their own medieval crowns, tiaras, badges or bookmarks. The workshops go on from 11.30am to 3.30pm and are suitable for children aged between three and 11. Entrance to the workshops costs £1 per child plus normal castle admission fees.

Oystermouth Castle sits majestically on the hill in Mumbles, with stunning views overlooking Swansea Bay. It features artwork from the 14th Century, a 30-foot high glass bridge and private staircases leading from vaults to rooms once used as banqueting halls.

Oystermouth Castle is open 11am-5pm Tuesday to Sunday until September 29, and weekends in October.
