Historians of the future will be given a glimpse of the NHS of today when they open a time capsule in Morriston Hospital in 2048. The capsule was unveiled at a ceremony yesterday (Tuesday 19th March) following on from last year’s NHS@70 celebrations. It includes instructions to be opened on the health service’s centenary. The capsule, sponsored by unions and Tata Steel, includes a selection of memorabilia representing past and present – ranging from 1930s hospital crockery to a 3D printed jaw. Cardiff-based scientists whose innovation could spell the end for certain types of injections are set to take their product to market. Picofluidics Ltd, which operates out of Cardiff Medicentre, has completed the rigorous programme of proof of concept testing with the help of scientists from Coventry University and funding from Innovate UK. Trials have confirmed the viability of Picofluidics’ plasma treatment technology, which enables the cost-effective production of collections of many thousands of microneedles. Cardiff Metropolitan University has teamed up with Cardiff school Ysgol Bro Edern to deliver an International project that is focused on teaching adolescents about how to have healthy relationships. The Lights 4 Violence (L4V) project, which is commissioned by European funding programme Horizon 2020, adopts a strength-based approach and aims to encourage 12-13-year olds to explore relationship skills while perhaps experiencing their first relationships, and to understand protective factors related to dating violence.
