Students at Cardiff Metropolitan University have been lending a hand to a project that aims to raise vital funds for charity Mothers of Africa, coinciding with International Women’s Day this Friday (8th March). Led by Maggie Cullinane, Technical Demonstrator at Cardiff School of Art and Design (CSAD), the project has seen 20 textiles students, along with 5 others from fashion, ceramics, and artist/designer/maker help to produce handmade quilts that will ultimately be raffled to raise funds for the African charity. A simple idea to help hospital staff monitor a patient’s fluid intake has been such a success that it’s going to be used across a health board. Last year, a group of adult nursing students at the University of South Wales (USW) – known as Team Hydr8 – suggested introducing jugs with yellow lids, rather than the traditional blue lids, for patients who are having fluids monitored. As the UK reflects on record February temperatures, scientists at Aberystwyth University are reporting a significant increase in heatwaves at sea – with potentially detrimental consequences for marine life.
