Welsh researchers have been awarded funding of almost £1.2 million to develop a new detector for tuberculosis in humans and animals that can report a result in one hour. The technology will be simple enough to be operated by any healthcare worker or veterinarian. It will be more specific and more sensitive than existing methods as well as significantly quicker than other types of tests. General entries into the 2025 Cardiff Half Marathon have sold out in record speed, with all general entries filled within 12 hours of going on sale. Registration for next year’s event opened on Wednesday 9 October and all early bird and second release tickets were snapped up in just over an hour. British air freight carrier, European Cargo, has confirmed its investment plans to open a new base in Wales Cardiff Airport is thrilled a new regular air freight service between China and Wales will be starting, thanks to European Cargo and the launch of its second UK base. The new base launches on 16 October 2024. There will initially be 3 weekly flights, building to 4, with the ambition of this frequency increasing in the future. The Development Bank of Wales has taken an equity stake in Cardiff-based Llusern Scientific as part of a substantial six-figure funding round that is helping the University of South Wales spinout to commercialise its testing for Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs). Llusern Scientific is one of six University spinouts that have collectively secured £1.7 million in equity funding from the Development Bank of Wales to date in 2024 as the Bank focusses on boosting innovation in Wales. Young people in Tonyrefail are working with the celebrated graffiti artist ‘Tee2Sugars’ to create a vibrant and colourful mural that celebrates Wales and their community. The exciting project is funded by the Council, linked to a local footbridge replacement that was completed earlier this year. A group of pupils from Tonyrefail Community School has helped to design the mural. One side of the artwork will show ‘Tonyrefail’ in large letters and depict traditional Welsh themes such as daffodils and our mining history – along with an anvil, which is an emblem of the village. Residents are being encouraged to give their views on exciting plans for Cwmcarn Forest Drive, with several drop-in sessions being held at the popular Caerphilly borough visitor attraction. Under the ambitious plans, Caerphilly County Borough Council and Natural Resources Wales will collaborate to find a private sector partner to further enhance Cwmcarn Forest Drive and Visitor Centre.
