The number of both professional advocates and advocacy services in Wales have reduced, even though the need for such services is growing as people’s issues are becoming increasingly challenging and more complex, according to new research undertaken by Age Cymru and launched at the start of Advocacy Awareness Week. A prolific thief from Rhondda has been jailed and banned from a long list of retailers. Jamie Johnson, 42, of Tonypandy, stole property worth thousands of pounds in a two-month, indiscriminate shoplifting spree targeting retailers across the south Wales valleys. Johnson stole products such as alcohol, meat, scratchcards, a pressure washer and even a set of Dracula teeth from large chains and small independent retailers. Johnson would sometimes use distraction techniques to dupe shop workers and committed 17 separate thefts during August and September, 2024. Plans to improve access between Penally and Tenby without using a vehicle are to be discussed at a public information event next week. The Active Travel proposals feature the creation of a Shared Use Path from Penally village to Tenby Golf Course, for pedestrians and cyclists, and creation of Multi-User Path from Clicketts Lane to Heywood Lane, that will also accommodate horse riders. Volunteers are being invited to help explore a new way to count pedestrian, bike, and car movements in Caerphilly. This pilot scheme is part of the Caerphilly Town 2035 Placemaking Plan, which aims to work together with Caerphilly residents to build a town that’s a great place for everyone to live, work, and visit. Efforts to tackle child poverty in Powys will be boosted thanks to a £90,000 grant from the Welsh Government, it has been announced. Powys County Council has been successful in securing a share of the £900,000 from the Welsh Government’s Child Poverty Innovation and Supporting Communities Grant Scheme. The funding will see the council and its partner Powys Association of Voluntary Organisations (PAVO) work together on pilot initiatives to tackle child poverty in the county.
