Cardiff to introduce maximum car park stays to deter commuters

The cost to park at district car parks across Cardiff will change on Monday, February 6th, under plans to help residents and shoppers secure parking which is currently being taken up by commuters.

The first two hours of parking will remain free of charge at all district car parks across the city, but prices will then rise dependent on how long someone parks. Under the current system, after the first two free hours, in the majority of these car parks, a flat rate is charged for all-day parking. The new system will only allow five hours parking in total.

The changes were agreed following concerns raised that commuters are using these car parks for extended periods of time, at very little cost, to the detriment of residents and shoppers.

Public consultations took place in 2019 and 2020 on these plans, but the implementation was delayed due to the COVID Pandemic. All the income received from parking revenue is ringfenced under Section 55 of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984. Any income received over and above the cost to provide the service is ringfenced for highway and transport improvements.

The following changes will be made at 11 district car parks in the following wards on February 6th:
