The Museum of Cardiff is to re-open, almost 18 months after it closed its doors at the start of the Covid-19 pandemic.
From Wednesday 1st September, visitors will be able to enjoy the Cardiff in Context exhibition in the ground floor gallery. City Lab(the basement gallery) and the Tiled Corridor will remain closed for now.
Entry to the museum will remain free, but visitor numbers will be limited to allow for social distancing. If capacity is reached, a queuing system will be in place.
Cabinet Member for Culture and Leisure, Cllr Peter Bradbury, said: “Maybe at some point in the future the Museum of Cardiff will be telling the story of the last 18 months, but for now we’re pleased that we can welcome visitors back through the doors and start bringing the fascinating history of Cardiff to life again through the stories of the people and communities of our city.”
Family visitors to the museum will be able to enjoy some extra fun activities including free Cardiff Characters trails, which can be picked up on arrival. My Museum family learning packs will also be available to take home, or they can be downloaded from the museum website.
A number of other safety measures are in place at the Museum to help people return to the museum safely, including:
- Visitors are asked to wear a face covering, use the hand sanitiser supplied, and maintain social distancing.
- A one-way system will be in operation.
- Stylus pens will be available to use on touchscreens and interactive displays. These can be picked up at the start of your visit and returned to a secure bin before you leave. The pens will be sanitised before being used by future visitors.
- Downloadable information about the objects on display – just point your smartphone camera wherever you see a QR code (or let a member of the team know if you need a paper copy).
- Much of the seating in the gallery has been removed. If you do need to sit down, please let a member of the team know.
The museum will be open Wednesday to Saturday, 10am – 4pm.
