Neath Port Talbot Council and the Police & Crime Commissioner for South Wales have joined forces to create a new, safe space for young people in Neath town centre.
Known as ‘The Hangout’, it aims to divert young people from being drawn into antisocial behaviour by giving them a safe and welcoming environment where they can socialise with their friends. They will be able to play computer games, access free Wi-Fi and charger points, purchase hot snacks and drinks as well as get support with issues affecting young people.
It is open to young people aged 11 and above and will be run by experienced youth workers and South Wales Police’s Neighbourhood policing team.
The initiative was developed between the council’s Community Safety, Youth Service and Youth Justice Teams with funding provided by South Wales Police and Crime Commissioner’s Violence Prevention Unit grant in response to concerns about rising levels of antisocial behaviour among young people in the area.
Neath Port Talbot Council’s Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Housing and Community Safety, Cllr Alun Llewelyn, said: “The Hangout is an exciting project that we hope will make a difference to young people in the area.
“By providing a safe space for young people to meet and engage in positive activities, we hope to reduce the risk of them getting caught up in antisocial behaviour.
“We are proud to be partnering with South Wales Police on this project and are looking forward to working together to make The Hangout a success.”
South Wales Police and Crime Commissioner Alun Michael, said: “Through the joint work of our Violence Prevention Unit, members of my team and the Council’s team, we have been able to secure the necessary support and finance to develop this significant initiative to tackle anti-social behaviour in Neath Town Centre. The ‘Hangout’ will give young people an opportunity to meet in a safe environment and to have the help and support of our youth work colleagues as well as the local PCSOs and other members of the local policing team. As a former youth worker, I know the vital importance of safe places where young people can engage safely with each other and with a trusted adult – this is a big step forward for Neath.”

The Hangout is open every Wednesday evening between 6:30pm and 8:30pm and is located at 14 London road, Neath, SA11 1HB.
