AN APPRENTICE is gearing up for a future in mechanics after engineering victory in a national contest.

Ryan Chrisham was a gold medallist in the Automotive Technology category at the Welsh Skills Competition and is now plying his trade at Gwyn Evans Commercial Vehicle Repairs in Ruthin.

The 22 year-old, who hails from the town, is enjoying an apprenticeship at the long-established Denbighshire firm while studying at Coleg Cambria.

He was delighted to pick up the prize and said it gave him more confidence in working on heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) and other types of haulage transport.

“I enjoyed the competition and would like to thank the college and everyone at Gwyn Evans Commercial Vehicle Repairs for their support,” said Ryan, a former pupil at Ysgol Brynhyfryd.

“There was pressure, especially some of the mechanical tasks given they were timed and there was a different environment, but I got through it and was pleased, and surprised, to win.

“It was a shame the UK event was cancelled due to the Coronavirus but still a great honour to have won the Welsh title.”

Mr Evans has long been a champion of apprenticeships and work-based learning and congratulated Ryan on his success.

“He has been a big asset to us and did so well to win the gold medal,” said Mr Evans.

“We have had many apprentices here over the years from Coleg Cambria and believe bringing education and real-time experience together prepares young people for the challenges of the workplace.

“Ryan is an example of that and is learning all the time – well done, Ryan.”

Alex Woodward, an Automotive Training Mentor at Cambria’s Bersham Road site in Wrexham, added: “The Welsh Skills Competition comprised a number of diagnostic tasks including various measurements using a variety of tools and equipment, which were completed on various makes of trucks and related components.

“Ryan conducted himself exceptionally well and was professional in his approach to each stage of the competition.

“He and his employer should be proud of his achievement; Ryan is a reflection of the high standards the company adheres to. Congratulations, Ryan.”
