South Wales Police have issued a warning to communities across the region following a rise in reports of courier fraud targeting vulnerable and elderly people.

The force says criminals are impersonating bank staff or police officers in a bid to trick victims into handing over cash, bank cards and other valuables. In some cases, victims have been defrauded out of thousands of pounds.

Offenders are using increasingly forceful tactics, including intimidation, to pressure individuals into complying with their demands. Typically, victims receive a phone call from someone claiming to be from their bank, who then attempts to arrange for money or items to be collected from their home.

South Wales Police is urging the public to remain vigilant and to look out for friends, neighbours and relatives who may be at greater risk.

Officers stress that neither banks nor the police will ever call asking for personal or banking details, request a PIN, or send someone to collect cash, cards or valuables.

Anyone who receives a suspicious call of this nature is advised to hang up immediately and report it.

The public is also being encouraged to speak with older relatives or those who may not regularly use social media, to ensure they are aware of this type of scam and know how to protect themselves.

Anyone with concerns or information about suspected fraud is urged to contact police via 101, or report it online. In an emergency, always dial 999.
