Contractor for Swansea’s Copr Bay District appoints administrators

Swansea Council has reassured residents and businesses following news that Buckingham Group has taken steps to avoid administration.

Buckingham Group are the council’s main contractor for the city’s Copr Bay district that stretches from close to the former St David’s Shopping Centre site to the area of the marina.

Buckingham this week filed a notice of intention to appoint administrators, which is a step companies can take before potentially going into administration.

A Swansea Council spokesperson said: “Buckingham has taken steps to avoid going into administration and we hope this will secure the company’s future.

“In the meantime, we can reassure residents and businesses in Swansea that the council is doing all it can to protect our position.

“The Copr Bay district is now largely complete and it’s business as usual at Swansea Arena and the Copr Bay south car park, regardless of Buckingham’s future.

“Buckingham is currently only undertaking finishing works to the car park on the city centre side of Oystermouth Road as well as some minor finishing works elsewhere on site. Our focus is on getting this work completed, and we’re discussing this with Buckingham.

“The council has protected its financial position. The finishing works were already being carried out at no cost to the council or the Swansea taxpayer, and we do not anticipate Buckingham’s situation leading to extra costs for the council.

“Swansea’s £1bn regeneration programme is on track and is unaffected by Buckingham’s position as they have no other contracts with the council.”
