Welsh Ambulance Service recently experienced its busiest day since New Year’s Day. The service dealt with 1,495 incidents across Wales on Wednesday, its most eventful day of the year so far second only to 01 January, when it had 1,593 incidents. Incidents for the period 06-12 August are up by 10% compared to the previous seven days (30 July-05 August), up by 18% compared to the same period last month (06-12 July) and by 11% on the same period last year (06-12 August 2019). A pair of 10-year-old budding authors have had their efforts to raise awareness of diabetes recognised with a Diabetes UK Inspire Award. Katie Courtney, who was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes and coeliac disease in June 2017, and her friend Ava Morgan were awarded the Diabetes UK Cymru Young People’s Outstanding Contribution Award. Last year, the two friends were inspired to create their book, ‘Hypo Dino’, to help explain parts of Katie’s condition, after a local author visited their school. Three gulls have lost their lives after being shot in the Port Talbot area by air rifle pellets. Reports were made to the RSPCA concerning the three birds in two separate incidents near Isaac Business Park in the South Wales town. A member of the public spotted two stricken gulls on Henshaw Street on 9 July – and contacted the RSPCA. The birds both had damaged wings, and one was bleeding heavily. South Wales Police have been providing an increased police presence across communities in South Wales after the number of drink and drug drive arrests increased over the lockdown period. Despite Covid-19 lockdown restrictions, analysis of drink and drug driving trends shows that there has been an increase in arrests this year compared to last year. Between 23rd March – 31st July 2020, drink driving arrests increased by almost 9%, and drug driving arrests increased by almost 50% compared to arrests made during this time in 2019.
