More than £37m has been paid out in financial support to businesses in Bridgend county borough since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic. In March last year, Welsh Government launched the first phase of grants for businesses and charities affected by the coronavirus lockdown and restrictions, with £30,065,000 paid out by Bridgend County Borough Council since then. Another £5,475,000 has been paid under the Non Domestic Rate Lockdown Grant scheme since November and £1,840,000 from the Business Restrictions Fund launched in December. Authorities across the UK are reporting problems with street lights which are switching themselves on and off in large numbers. Bridgend County Borough Council’s Street Lighting team are currently investigating and estimate that around 7,000 local lighting columns could be affected. The fault is believed to be a software problem affecting global positioning technology which calculates what time the sun rises and sets. Residents are being reassured that they do not need to report the issue as it is already being dealt with. Rhondda Cynon Taf Council has officially opened its new Emergency Control Centre, to be used in the event of major incidents which affect the County Borough and the safety of its residents. Caerphilly County Borough Council’s Cabinet has yesterday (Wednesday 13th January) unanimously agreed an approach to help tackle the issue of long-term empty properties. The Enforced Sale Policy will enable the Council to use statutory powers to target long-term problematic empty properties, derelict commercial buildings and land; bringing them back into use where possible.
